Earthquake Lake, Montana

Earthquake Lake is a lake in southwestern Montana, United States. It was created after an earthquake struck on August 17, 1959, killing 28 people.  Today, Quake Lake is 190 feet (58 m) deep and 6 miles (9.7 km) long. US 287 follows the lake and offers glimpses of the effects of the earthquake and landslide.  A visitor's center is just off the road, there we watched a short film detailing the events of August 17th when the earthquake hit the area causing the lake to form. The lake is mostly within Gallatin National Forest.

This is the portion of the mountain that fell into the river causing the lake to form.

Hiking up the rubble, to see the memorial rock.

View of the river that flows on the opposite side of the land slide.

Our home away from home with the lake and mountains behind her.
